A dragonfly symbolizes joy, beginnings, and growth. Dragonflies also represent transformation as they begin their lives in the water as nymphs. Once they can fly, they are able to move in all directions, even backwards. Some believe that the presence of a dragonfly is a visit from a loved one who has passed.

An illustration of violets and a dragonfly, dating back a few hundred years, were collaged onto a shingle from my grandfather’s barn in northern New Brunswick. This piece also features metallic brads which give the appearance of old nails, as well as watercolour pencils and Japanese papers. Scraps from a vintage thesaurus are also part of the collage. This collage has an eco-dyed piece of twine to allow for hanging. But, the twine could be removed in order to display it on a small easel.

Signed on the back, this piece is finished with a matte varnish to ensure protection against fading, discolouration, and moisture. Avoid placing all artwork in direct sunlight.
